Cultural: Winter Break - 2 week vacation from school!
Here in Poland school kids have 2 weeks off during winter - after Christmas and before Easter.
For us this was a strange break and I wasn’t used to having one so soon after Christmas. But of course, the kids loved it!
What they do is hope that people go to the south part of Poland and go skiing - with their families, of course. Skiing and ski jumping are big industries here in Poland. Poland’s ski jumping men’s team is quite good.
What they do so that the resorts aren’t inundated with the whole country at once is that they split the regions up and divvy up the times and regions when schools have off. They also alternate them from year to year. The first break is probably the least appreciated since it comes 2 weeks or less after the Christmas break and kids are really just getting back into the idea of going to school.
This year the time slots are like this - Section 2 overlaps with 1 and 3 a week on each end.
Session 1 - Jan. 14-27
Session 2 - Jan. 21-Feb. 3
Session 3 - Jan. 28- Feb. 10
Session 4 - Feb. 11-24
The regions are split up by where you live. Here’s a map.
I’m planning on putting out some more coupons so more parents can come get children’s quilts during our winter break. i am now down to only 46.
I gave away several on Saturday.
Winter break is a problem for working parents with children in school. Often one of them has to get off work, though the schools do tend to have activities during this time. Obviously, however, the POINT of the winter break is a break from school and not to keep going back to school for activities!
I was told a long time ago that companies had to allow parents off during this time, but I’m not sure what the status is currently or what is actually the law as opposed to tradition.
When I make the coupons this time, I’ll put on them that I have children’s designs only. I put away the few dark ones I had left back in my storage room. I’d like to save those for next time since I don’t have any more of that fabric. Rachael had given me that “cheater fabric” and we had cut it into sections and made between 30 and 40 with the same design - changing only the borders. I’m down to only 6 left now.
But my post wasn’t about giving away the rest of the quilts. My cultural post is about winter break! Our kids in school are about to get another one here in Poland. Some Polish kids start their winter break today (Monday, the 21st) with their 2 weeks off from going to school!
And now you know = winter break is a “thing”!
Be sure to check out what my sis has for you in the store!
