Introduction to Sewing

Have you just taken up the wonderful hobby of sewing, and don’t quite know where to begin?  You have so many questions, this is a complicated hobby, what am I getting myself into?  I go and buy fabric but just don’t know what to do with it!  I am afraid to take the sewing machine I bought out of the box!  So many sewing machines, how do I tell the differences between them, which one is for me?  What are all these different feet for?

If you have asked any of these questions, this informal lecture/discussion class is for you.  The class will cover:

Sewing machine types & brands overview – new vs. vintage

What kind of machine do I need and how do I get it?

Anatomy of the sewing machine

Care and feeding of the sewing machine

What equipment do I really need?

Needles and bobbins - types, how they are inserted matters!!!

Threading, types of spools

Equipment – cutting mats, rotary cutters, rulers

Fabric & interfacing types

Irons & pressing

Sewing tips & more!

Bring your machine if you can’t get it going, Julie will try to get you started.
